1928 CS1 Norton

A CS1 Norton as we like to see them - being used as the maker intended! Most photos were made at a stop during the 2008 West Kent Run.

The Binks carburetter with the twin float bowls is a very nice detail. A rusty tank may be the reason for the petrol filter below the saddle. The clutch looks a bit modern to me and the 'box has a positive stop mechanism fitted.

หลังจากตกเป็นข่าวฮือฮาเมื่อ 2 เดือนที่ผ่านมาว่า อันโตนิโอ แบนเดอร์รัส ดาราดังชาวสเปน มีความสนใจที่จะส่งทีมเข้าแข่งขันเวิลด์จีพี 2010 ในรุ่น 600 ซีซี 4 จังหวะ หรือ MOTO 2 ซึ่งเป็นรุ่นที่สหพันธ์จักรยานยนต์นานาชาติ (เอฟไอเอ็ม) นำมาแทนการแข่งขันรุ่น 250 ซีซีเดิม

ล่าสุด motogp.com รายงานว่าเทพบุตรโซโร วัย 49 ปี ได้ยืนยันส่งทีมแข่งในปี 2010 เป็นที่เรียบร้อยแล้ว ถายใต้ชื่อทีมว่า "แจ็ค แอนด์ โจนส์ บาย อันโตนิโอ แบนเดอร์รัส" โดยมี โจน โอลิเวย์ นักบิดสแปนิช และเคนนี นอยส์ จากสหรัฐอเมริกา เป็น 2 นักแข่งประจำทีม

โดย ดานี เดบาเอีย ทีมบอสแจ็ค แอนด์ โจนส์ บาย อันโตนิโอ แบนเดอร์รัส เผยว่า "อันโตนิโอ คือแฟนตัวยงของโมโตจีพี ซึ่งนี่คือครั้งแรกที่เขาตัดสินใจลงทุนในกีฬาที่เขารัก เขายืนยันว่าจะเข้าไปดูแลทีมในทุกๆสนามของฤดูกาล 2010 เท่าที่จะเป็นไปได้ และแน่นอนเป้าหมายที่ตั้งไว้คือการคว้าชัยชนะให้ได้ในฤดูกาลหน้า"

สำหรับศึกจักรยานยนต์ทางเรียบชิงแชมป์โลกฤดูกาล 2010 ทั้งรุ่นโมโตจีพี ,โมโตทู และ 125 ซีซี จะเปิดฉากขึ้นที่สนามโลไซอัล เซอร์กิต ประเทศกาตาร์ ในวันที่ 11 เมษายนปีหน้า

The Norton International was a British motorcycle made by Norton Motorcycles between 1931 and 1939. A TT replica sports roadster, production of the Model 30 International ended on the outbreak of World War II.

Development:

The name International was first used by Norton for its TT replica sports roadster in 1932. Designed by Joe Craig, Arthur Carroll designed an overhead-camshaft engine for the works racers and although it retained the 79 x 100mm bore and stroke of the Norton CS1 the Model 30 was new. The racing heritage led to quickly detachable wheels and hairpin type valve springs that could be changed rapidly when racing. In 1933 the forks and gearbox were redesigned and in 1935 the Sturmey-Archer gearbox was replaced, as Sturmey-Archer had stopped making gearboxes, so Norton bought the rights to the design and commissioned Burman’s to produce them. These gearbox’s proved so good they remained unchanged for the next 30 years.

In 1936 the engine was upgraded with an alloy head and barrel with a bronze liner. In 1938 suspension was upgraded to plunger type Production of the Model 30 ended on the outbreak of World War II. After the war production of the International Model 40 (350cc) restarted with an iron head and barrel, as fitted to the pre-war CS1 and CJ Nortons. The suspension was upgraded to Norton Roadholder telescopic forks instead of girders and "Clubmans" versions were produced without silencers and lights for racing use. Close ratios gearboxes were supplied as standard from 1947 and the alloy engine made a comeback in 1953 with a new version of the Featherbed frame. Volume production of the International ended in 1955 although small numbers were built to special order for two or three years after.

Jimmy Guthrie

In 1935 works Norton team rider Jimmie Guthrie set a number of world speed records on a Norton International at the concrete bowl track in Montlhery, France. As well as setting a new one-hour world record at a speed of 114.09 mph, he also broke the 50 km, 50 mile, 100 km and 100 mile records.

George Formby

George Formby's Norton International

A Norton International owned by comedian George Formby sold for £30,582 at an auction on December 3 2007. The 1947 Norton International was one of several motorcycles owned by Formby, who starred in the film No Limits, a spoof of the 1935 Isle of Man TT race. The International was presented to Formby during a visit to Norton’s Bracebridge Street factory in July 1947

1927 ES2 racer

From Simon's archives: This reputedly is an ex-works 1927 ES2 racer (except that Norton did not use the ''ES2" type number as early as June 1927) that was restored by the late Wilf Green - a Yorkshire character if ever there was one.

The first OHC CS1 racers designed by Walter Moore were put into competition in 1927. Norton was being cautious to have an OHV version of the racer available as a backup.

Mystery Norton part 3

Another set of pictures of a Norton that shares some peculiars with Rob's latest purchase. The pictures are not vey clear and the bike has been raced so surely many parts may have been discarded and replaced by whatever was available at the time, but... this clearly is a two stay frame designed to accomodate a Royal Enfield rear hub and the gearbox is a Sturmey Archer. This may have been a 1930 CS1 model like Rob's and Stanley's (Thanks, Alf).

Ordering an Inter

Someone ordering an M30 International in 1934. I'm surprised by the tone of the letter; they can't tell mr. Burnett when his very expensive motorcycle will be delivered. Do they ask him beforehand not to complain when this takes longer than anticipated? Demand for these machines must have been high. (from Alf's archives)
